monastic retreat pictureThe word “monastery” instantly transports us to a place of peace, mindfulness, ritual, and communal spirit. We will run away to a metaphoric monastery under the branching oaks of La Casa de Maria: walk the labyrinth, gather around the fireplace for celebration and sharing, and work (and creatively play) with art and writing in our very own Scriptorium.

You will capture the weekend in a Book of Hours, a beautiful handmade artist’s book, filled with painted pages and written reflection. We’ll begin by making the book itself, considering form and function.  On Friday, you’ll create marbled papers that will be used for the book’s one-of-a-kind cover, and optionally, as decorative elements within the book pages.

You’ll marble different types of papers (white and natural backgrounds) and use various tools and techniques to produce your own marbling designs.  We know you’ll agree that these papers are unique pieces of art on their own! We’ll introduce new approaches we’ve been working with for the past several months.

Then, in response to La Casa’s natural environment, sacred space, and seasonal ritual, we’ll focus on the book’s content.  Several writing and art invitations will be shared, including:

  • Pencil and pen drawings and watercolor notations
  • Printmaking embellishments, including a glorious print of a labyrinth
  • Illuminated design
  • Poetry and journaling prompts

What emerges in your Book of Hours from your experimentations and musings will be a record of our Monastic Retreat, an account of the passage of time and play, and a reflection of who you are as an artist and writer.

No previous art experience is necessary.  All supplies are provided.

Joni Chancer and Gina Rester-Zodrow have facilitated art workshops nationally and internationally for over 20 years, inviting participants to discover, render, and celebrate the inspirational beauty of the natural world.
